[Silverlight *] “I keep getting reprompted to install Silverlight – even though I JUST installed it”

We recently deployed our Silverlight app to the rest of the teams in our company, and I had a user that came to me because no matter how many times he installed Silverlight [by clicking on the installation link he was given on the page] it would keep prompting him every time he tried to view the app.

I checked the version numbers and everything seemed correct. I uninstalled and reinstalled on my machine to make sure I had the same Silverlight build as he did, and mine worked fine. I was puzzled.

I had him check firefox, and *poof* it worked fine in firefox. After some searching on teh interwebs I figured out the solution [although not the cause] of his problem. For some reason [if anyone knows why please leave a comment] the Silverlight addon in IE7 was becoming disabled… so even though it was installed, it wasn’t being used.

The fix for this

  • Go to “Tools”->”Manage Add-ons”->”Enable or Disable Add-ons”.
  • Search the disabled list for “Microsoft Silverlight”. If it is not there, then select “Show: Add-ons that have been used by Internet Explorer” and check that list.
  • Select the add-on and then Enable it in the Settings box below.
  • Close down and restart IE

Now your Silverlight plugin should be loaded correctly when you view your page.

Also, if this was not your problem, but you are still getting the problem of always getting prompted for installation, then try these posts:
